As Branch 26 of the American Medical Women's Association, the Rhode Island Medical Women's Association has become the first and only organization in Rhode Island dedicated to the professional and personal needs of women physicians and their patients. Since its founding by six members in 1981, the membership of the Rhode Island Medical Women's Association now approaches more than 150 female medical students, residents, fellows and attendings. The Rhode Island Medical Women's Association seeks to recognize the special needs of women in medicine and female patients and to help meet the challenges of tomorrow.

From the President

Dear Colleague:

This is an invitation to join the Rhode Island Medical Women's Association (RIMWA). The main reason is your time. We all have very little of it and RIMWA is built in a way to access the following:

Networking. Every event I attend, I either get to put a face to the name of a physician my patient sees, or I meet someone new to add to my personal referral list.

Rhode Island Medical Society Council seat.  Based on our membership we have a seat on the RIMS Council. In today’s financial and political climate, we need to be organized and numbers count. Our seat on the Council affords us a voice in the Council’s decision-making process. I used to think being a doctor meant job security. It is no longer true, and none of us is immune to budget cuts, rate hikes, lower reimbursements.

Social Support. We all need a break from time to time. It’s great to see old friends and meet new ones without having to make the arrangements. It is good to be able to put life on the back burner for an hour or two.

Frances Conklin, MD. The best reason of all to join is to spend time with our senior octogenarian RIMWA member and take a walk through history and the door to the future.

Please join. We really do need each other.

Very truly yours,
Elizabeth A. Laposata, MD
President

Benefits of RIMWA Membership
The Rhode Island Medical Women's Association was founded by women doctors to help themselves meet the challenge of tomorrow. Today, RIMWA has taken an active role in providing a support network for the professional and personal growth of women doctors in our area. Women physicians comprise 1/2 of the physician population. Together we have, now more than ever, the potential for a great collective spirit, one with prowess-one that really works to help manage our futures in a systematic organized way.

If you are a practicing physician, house officer, or fellow, RIMWA provides you with:

• A meeting ground to interact with colleagues on academic, political and social issues critical to women doctors and patients.

• An active involvement in the pursuit of a work environment more sensitive to the lifestyles and professional interests of women physicians.

• A referral network for women physicians establishing their own practices.

• Social functions with other women professionals.

Please support our continued effort to improve the quality of our professional and personal lives as women physicians. Join us now!
